Essential for Living is the most comprehensive functional, life skills curriculum and assessment instrument available today. Essential for Living is designed for children with autism who present with limited language repertoires and problem behavior. Unlike the other curricula described in this proposal, Essential for Living is designed for children and adults with autism, along with those with other significant developmental disabilities like Down syndrome, Angelman syndrome, and Cornelia de Lange syndrome. Essential for Living is also based on B. F. Skinner’s analysis of language and provides innovative components of behavior analysis, like teaching to fluency, and recording small increments of learner progress, that are not emphasized by other curricula.
Essential for Living is appropriate for young children with autism who are no longer making steady progress on a developmental curriculum and for whom catching up with their typically-developing peers and acquiring a large repertoire of pre-academic and academic skills are no longer reasonable expectations. Essential for Living is also appropriate for older children and adults with autism, along with children and adults of all ages with other significant developmental disabilities like those previously mentioned. Children can be gradually and seamlessly transitioned from the VB-MAPP to Essential for Living.
– Initial and ongoing skills assessments
– Assessments of problem behavior that are consistent with Dr. Hanley’s synthesized functional assessments
– Program plans with skills that matter
– Summaries of learner progress in small increments
– Teaching protocols
– Individual and group therapy
